When we raise the value of labour here, we raise it across the supply chain.
Canadian Labour is here at the CILAS Calis Workers’ Centre in Mexico City.
Canada said we would put workers first when we renegotiated NAFTA in 2018. That meant we had to build up the labour movement here in Mexico.
That’s how you create lasting, real benefits for workers - make sure they have a strong organization to represent their interests.
So as part of the new NAFTA (T-MEC, as they call it here) we’re funding Canadian labour organizations to lend their expertise.
At this centre, Unifor is working with CILAS - the local labour organization. They’re helping workers to get informed on their rights, to organize and grow union membership, and to collectively bargain for better.
We’re a part of something big here. Right now, Mexico is leading the biggest labour reform in the country’s history.
Over the last five years in Mexico, over 500,000 workers have joined a union, they’ve raised the minimum wage, and they’ve launched labour tribunals across the country to uphold workers’ rights.
No more lowest common denominator.
This is good for workers in Canada, too.
We have free trade across this continent. Our supply chains are so tightly linked.
And when we raise the value of labour here, we raise it all across right across North America.
That’s why Canadian labour is here. That’s why Canada is here.
Because we believe in it. We believe in unions, we believe in workers.
And so would anyone who could see what they’re doing down here.
Gracias to Hector & the CILAS/Unifor team for letting me sit in on some workshops and meet the workers. And the taquiza was the best meal we had in Mexico.
